MAE RESEARCHERS RECEIVE ASME RUDOLF KALMAN BEST PAPER AWARD

Researchers Patrick Sammons, Doug Bristow and Robert G. Landers have been selected to receive the 2020 ASME Rudolf Kalman Best Paper Award for their paper entitled, "Two-Dimensional Modeling and System Identification of the Laser Metal Deposition Process," published in the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control in February 2019.

This paper develops the first multi-dimensional model of additive manufacturing that illuminates how in layer dynamics couple with layer-to-layer dynamics to give rise to instabilities. The models developed in the paper give rise to new frameworks for precision control of additive manufacturing processes.

This award is given annually by the Dynamic Systems and Control Division of ASME to the authors of the best paper published in the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems Measurement and Control during the preceding year.

Patrick Sammons received his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Missouri S&T under the advisement of Drs. Bristow and Landers, professors of mechanical engineering.
