Tim Barefield

Chief Operating Officer, Pershing Square

Over my career I have worked as an individual contributor, a member of a team, a supervisor of a team, both small and large, a manager of a large department, and on a number of top management teams including as a CEO.  I have worked at a large high technology company, a small insurance brokerage, a startup retail food business, global French and Swiss hotel companies, a startup internet company, and at one of the most successful hedge funds in the finance industry.  There have been some key things that I have learned which come up over and over again.  Some of them deal with being an individual contributor and team member, some of them deal with being a supervisor or manager with leadership responsibility and some of them are purely operational.  I plan to share those things and why I believe at least some of them will be important for anyone who plans to graduate from Missouri S&T and work in an organization of ranging in size from two people to two hundred thousand people (so everyone at Missouri S&T who does not plan to go live in a cave).
